The mysterious lady in yellow is one of our local characters.

NOTE: Some of these have been replicated so much online we’re not sure who’s the real originator. We’ll give you credit if you let us know. Also, we know that other areas of Miami (e.g., Hialeah) can relate to most/all of these, too!

  • You can distinguish between the sounds of the ice cream trucks, fruit trucks and the knife sharpeners.
  • You call flip-flops chancletas.
  • You’ve seen the old lady who dresses head to toe in yellow, the hunchback man who feeds the birds and local stray cats or the bike rider with two voices.
  • You live 15 minutes from the beach, but never go.
  • You know your pastelitos and croquetas, and where to find the best pan con bistec, gallo pinto, baleada, pupusa, ceviche, pandebono and taco!
  • You know when Viernes Culturales takes place.
  • You’re walking distance from a batido de mamey.
  • You know only tourists go clubbing on South Beach.
  • You get mad if the DJ doesn’t play salsa, merengue, cumbia, bachata or reggaeton at a party.
  • You know which neighbors have the mango tree, avocado tree, etc. (and they know what kind of tree you have in YOUR backyard, if you have one).
  • You don’t freak out when you hear yelling and screaming. It’s just normal conversation among neighbors.
  • It’s no big deal to see chickens crossing the road.
  • It’s normal to see guys wearing cowboy hats or panama hats.
  • You know which candles to buy and when.
  • You’re not surprised to hear drumming and singing at your neighbors’ house, and no one calls the police.
  • You don’t flinch when you see a whole roasted pig or fish. You salivate.
  • You know how to play double-nine dominos.
  • You know what a fritanga is.
  • Your local department store has a large statue of San Lazaro next to the check-out counter.
  • You’ve lost track of the strange driving maneuvers you’ve witnessed along Calle Ocho and West Flagler.
  • You’ve at least tried smoking a cigar.
