If you are staying in a hotel or AirBnB in or near Little Havana, why not walk or bike to your destination? Some hotels or AirBnBs offer bike rentals. Here is our advice for you, if you choose either of these options:

  • Be safe.

Miami has a reputation for really bad drivers. Moreover, many of its streets (until more recently) have been designed to privilege the car — and not pedestrians or cyclists. Pedestrians: use the sidewalk whenever necessary, and walk defensively. Even if you know you have the right of way, drivers may not respect you, especially if they’re trying to take a right hand turn. Cyclists: whenever possible, choose routes with bike lanes. Wear helmets.

  • Take your time.

The benefit of walking or biking to Little Havana is that you have a chance to see and experience places and happenings that those on the tour buses or cars are likely to miss. Stop and enjoy a cafecito at a ventanita (walk-up window). Purchase a fresh mango from a local fruit truck, or stop to watch a soccer game in a local park. Practice your Spanish with locals as you stand and rest in the shade of an almond tree. That’s Little Havana!

  • Prepare for the weather.

In Miami, we can go from sunny skies to a massive downpour very quickly. During our rainy season, it’s a good idea to avoid cycling, or — if you’re walking — to bring an umbrella! An umbrella (and water bottle) is also a must if you are walking in very sunny and hot weather. In fact, we suggest that you avoid walking outside for too long (during the day) in months such as August, when the combination of heat and humidity can give you a heatstroke!

  • Bike-And-Ride

Take your bike … and the bus! If you have a single-seat two-wheeler, you can load it onto most buses in Miami-Dade. Learn more. Find out about public transportation in Little Havana.
